bleach spotlight: Quincies

I think we can all agree that Quincy are an amazing species, with incredible powers, enthralling characters and phenomenal innovative skill. Whilst most are spiritual beings, they are also primarily human, with a unique ability to manipulate reishi into Spirit Weapons. Bleach shows us fantastic Quincy, from the introduction of the species through Uryu Ishida to the Wandenreich in the Thousand Year Blood War. Throughout the series, the Quincy are undoubtably unique and quick to become fan favourites.

Quincies in bleach

Tite Kubo's Bleach shows us a variety of different Quincy. From his very first introduction in Uryu Ishida, we are introduced to the world of the Quincy. In Bleach, Quincies gain their abilities much differently to WoR, as they inherit them from Yhwach. They're a fairly rare species as we do not see another Quincy, aside from Uryu's father, until the Thousand Year Blood War where we are introduced to Yhwach and the Wandenreich.

Quincy powers and abilities

Quincy abilities are by far one of the vastest in the series, with a multitude of Spirit Weapon possibilities. Primarily, they are able to manipulate the Reishi in the air to form weapons. They are most powerful in places like the Soul Society and Hueco Mundo where reishi is an abundance.

Quincy have numerous tools at their disposal, such as the Steele Schneider that can be utilised as a small sword or substitute arrow. The Ginto can be likened to Kido, in that it serves the purpose of performing 'spells' for the Quincy. The Sanrei Glove is one of the more well-known and certainly rare items for Quincy, which grant them exceptional power upon its release. It can only be stopped by the rare technique: Letzt Stil. This power, however, strips a Quincy of all their powers and so is used as a last resort.

Beyond their Spirit Weapons, some Quincy are capable of a second-stage similar to Bankai called Vollstandig. It is considered as an evolution and a solution to Letzt Stil. This power grants a Quincy immense power and a slight change in appearance.

Quincy in World of Reapers

World of Reapers has a different lore and world building, hence Quincy works a little bit differently here. Don't worry though, Quincies are just as awesome here as they are in bleach. So, if you'd love to make a Quincy character, here is a quick guide.

First when creating your character you will need to choose a soul type: human soul (you were a human who died and came to the Soul Society), hollow soul (you were previously a hollow purified by a Soul Reaper and ended up in the Soul Society) and pure soul (you were born in the Soul Society). These will have varying differences to how your character became a quincy.

Once your soul type is chosen, will need to fill out the sorting quiz to be sorted into one of our four clans, Shinigami, Quincy, Fullbringer and Arrancar. If you get Quincy, then congratulations, you are now a Quincy!

World of Reapers offers a unique option: origins. Origins help explain how your powers came to be, so with Quincies, you will have two options:

1. Human World - The Human World is a unique one, as this origin is only available for users with a human soul. With this, you are an alive human given Quincy powers living in the Human World and given the special opportunity to attend Shin'O Academy in the Soul Society in order to hone your Quincy powers.
2. East Origin - With this origin you are a soul living in the Soul Society. It can be paired with any soul type. You have two options for how you can gain your Quincy powers: the Hogyoku kept safe within the Seireitei felt your desire for power and remade you into a Quincy or your powers were laying dormant within you.

Whichever origin you choose, you can still have access to all Quincy abilities. As you attend Shin'O Academy, you will gradually unlock different abilities. In your third year, you will have access to Ginto: Sprenger, at year six you will be able to use Blut and in your final year, year 7, you can use Ginto: Heizen. When you graduate, you can now unlock your own unique Spirit Weapon. Your limit is your imagination! You can use your awesome powers in battles, topics and events.
